I was stuck the other day at work, the plug came undone on my fuel pump on my Tahoe. I had no way to drop the tank, so we decided to measure and use a cutoff wheel to access the tank from inside. Yes, I know the tank would have been easier to drop, but I had no way to do this at work.

Anyhow, it came out a whole lot better than I thought. We hit the nail on the head with the location of the pump and the lines, so there was no issue there. We pulled the pump to see what we could see in the tank, and to clean the sender contacts (airtex pump). However, upon looking in my tank, i discovered that I could see no baffles whatsoever in the tank. This explains my floating needle, as I already replaced the stepper motor in the cluster.

Interestingly enough, I was not having pump issues, but i recently replaced the ground, and one day recently it just cranked...and cranked...and cranked. I tugged at the ground and the wires and out popped the plug.

But, I am pleased with the outcome. I am going to make a easy access plate over that, undercoat the sides to prevent rust, and the carpet goes right back in place with no issue. You can easily get at it under the rear drivers side seat.

I today tossed on my TBI modded tbi unit, complete with the 18 psi spring, and the pump handles it fine. Tahoe runs like never before... Turns out the specs for this pump, and I verified it with airtex, is 40 psi min, 50 psi full load.

Works for me.

Interesting find. Explains why the needle moves so much.

I've also wondered why they didn't put in an access hole for the fuel pump. It would make things much easier. My 95 subaru had an access hatch in the trunk for the pump.

i decided that i was gonna make an access panel the day my fuel pump goes out haha, i know they dont go out often and i probably would only be replacing it once every few years, but i feel like the work to do that is much more worth it then dropping the tank, cause knowing my luck im gonna have a full tank of gas when it goes....

I sure will. I will do that later today, and post it up tonight.

I was actually surprised to find my tank was plastic. I had a suburban before and it was a 96...and its tank was metal.

And by the way, when this happened, I had a little over 3/4 tank...would not have been very fun to drop in the first place.
