I have a 99 Yukon SLT 4wd (125,*** mi.). Over the last 9 months I've had a very intermitent starting problem. Up until last week, it has occurred about once every month or 2 or 3. But last week, it would not start after 20 times trying. It will start up and then die immediately (it literally runs for maybe 1 second). In the past it will "die" (immediately after starting) once or twice and then will start and run normally. When it happened last week I tried 20 times to no avail. I did not notice if the "security" light was on (or flashing) during this because 1) I was not looking for it & 2) when it wouldn't stay running I would turn the key off right away. I waited about 30 to 40 minutes and tried to start again, this time it starts and runs first time. I've been looking at other forums/posts and it sounds like this is somewhat of a common issue that looks to be related to the passlock system. My question is, how should I troubleshoot this situation to determine what part(s) need to be replaced? FYI: It has been starting & running perfect since the one issue last week. This weekend I replaced the fuel filter and checked my fuel pressure (62psi with key on (pump on) and engine off).
Thanks for your help guys!!

This is exactly what happened to me. While it didnt happen often, when it did it was very aggrivating. Sometimes it would start in ten minutes sometimes it would take an hour. You never know when it's going to happen or how long it will take to start.

How to troubleshoot/determine what parts = these are the parts w/part #s and descriptions I used to resolve this issue.
You will have to remove your steering wheel and everything under it to get to the rediculously placed mounting points. OH you will also need a special tool to remove the lock cylinder case. I made one if you need one I can send oen to you.

26049449 is the lock cylinder case w/ ign lock actuator, ign switch actuator and passlock sensor
26075995 is the ignition switch with passlock connector

This is my thread about the same issue.

Either way, if you need anything feel free to get in touch with me.
Good luck

I had a 97 blazer that had the same problem and I had to replace the ignition switch and harness. This is a common problem for the s10's, (along with the leaky intake manifold).

I can't say for sure, but I think the tahoe uses the same ignition switch. Try RockAuto for the part #'s, they were a ton cheaper than the stealership

Sounds like a similar problem w/ the '04 chevy express I drove. Took it to the dealer twice behind that. Still not sure what it was, but my job put me in a '11 ford transit (way too small for what i need) so I guess I don't need to worry about it anymore

Hey 992dr, Thanks for the info, I thought it would be something like this. My problem is that this stupid issue only comes up every 2 - 3 months, so when I replace parts I'm going to have to wait a few months to see if it happens again. Anyhow, I don't want it to happen again so I think I'll replace a few parts. Question on the parts you listed. The lock cylinder case (26049449), is that just the cylinder case without the lock cylinder, so that means I keep my current key? And, do you know possitively that these P/N's are good for my 99 Yukon. I ask because I tried looking these numbers up in an OEM parts guide for my truck and could not find them. Lastly, what was the "special tool" you had to make and how did you make it?
Thanks again for your help!

Any time man.
That is what is so aggrivating about this problem, you never know when its going to happen.
Yes, just the case. You can use your factory key, just reset it when youre done with the install.
Though I cant guarantee this, I am almost posotive they will fit. BUT, when it comes to the Hanes/Chilton books, they are listed as Tahoe AND Yukon. I feel pretty good about it.
This is the tool. I just cut off some of the socket and welded it onto a long thin bolt to get to the bolts that hold the ignition housing in. They are impossible to get to without something like this. I forget what size it is but its a star bit. If you need one feel free to PM me, I'll send one your way.

Custom made tool for ignition switch

Hey 992dr,
I tried to send you a PM, but I'm not allowed as I don't have enough posts yet. It happened again this morning. Didn't start on first try and the "security" light flashed 3 times and then stayed off. I got out of the truck, locked it (with the key fob), unlocked it (with the key fob), got in and it started right up. WTF! So, I'm going to replace the parts sooner than later and I wanted to take you up on your offer to send me your custom made tool for the ignition switch. Can you send me a PM with your email and hopefully we can communicate from there.
Thanks again for all your help!!

Hey guys, can someone do me a favor and send a PM to 992dr and direct him to check this thread again so I can get in contact with him. Apparently I do not have enough posts to send him a PM myself.
Thanks in advance!!!!
