Hi all kinda new here just wanting to get others info on my dilema. I picked up a 99 yukon slt about six months ago for about $800. since ive had it ive replaced the water pump, radiator, stab links torsion bar mount, fuel pump, completely rebuilt the rear end, and fixed my fuel guage issue. the only things i have left to fix are the 4l60e decides to not shift into first or od once i drive about 35-40 minutes which confuses the crap outta me and my rear driver side barn door is rotted out. Im getting ready to overhaul the tranny in the next couple weeks and was just wondering how much farther i should go into this truck. so far ive got about 2 grand in it that i think isnt bad but im getting ready to have to travel about 600 miles every few weeks. so im not sure if i should continue dumping money into it or get something else. i love this truck just cost so damn much and havent been able to do anything i want to it, just what i need to.

Well I got a 99 Tahoe for #1300 and Ive put about $1000 into it so far. Its worth it in the end. Nice feeling of accomplishment :) I have about $2000 more to put into it to get it back to where it was. My barn driver side barn door is rotted out too, I get to learn to do sheetmetal work.

Just remember in good condition these are like 3-4k so we're both ahead of the game!
And the list of things youve replaced is pretty much all the major things that can go wrong really, with any car/truck. Other than the motor blowing up.... so you're almost done as far as I can tell.

lol well thats good to hear. the only thing that concerns me is the tranny. its so wierd if i drive for like 30 or so minutes in the city ill eventualy get a hard 1-2 shift then from that point on it wont shift back into first or od, but if i get on the highway before that harsh shift itll work fine even for a 80-90 mile trip, til i get off the highway and stop at a few red lights then the harsh shift and no more shifting after that. And it sets two shift silenoid codes. Ive read it could just be the silenoids or the valve body which i could do with the tranny in the truck. but the thing that gets me is before that hard shift it works perfect.

Welcome.. from a Willoughby'er...

You need the drivers side barn door? i have a passenger side thats decent, the drivers side isnt rotted out, but has rust. there black if your interested in those..

Make a budget on your truck, if you keep dumping money into it, youll be spending more then if you bought something else that was more reliable. Is it throwing any codes? and is the trans the last thing to fix??

If you posted any parts on cl I've probably seen them at some point because that where i do most of my shopping lol. And for reliability it hasnt left me stranded yet which completely surprised me seeing the state of the g80 that i removed and had drove about 200 miles on. It was probably five miles away from bombing the rest of the axle. And yes I keep getting the same four codes two are p0765 shift/timing silenoid and the other two are p0160 o2 bank 2 sensor 2 no activity detected. i think those are the codes. the tranny is the last major thing to fix other than it needs shocks all the way around and my damn headlights only work when they want. Overall i cant complain i just am nervous about the long trips im gonna have to take in the beast. And as to the barn doors ill have to see about it when the time comes its on the back burner for now.

To sunlit an ceejkay so what you guys are saying is i have a way to go huh? Thanks guys now i dont feel so bad about how much moneys gone in so far lol. By 2 grand is my total truck and all parts ive put into it. By the way anyone have any ideas on how to get a reciever unstuck from a hitch. I've beat it and put a slide hammer on it with no luck. I dont have any torches to heat it up either. I hate it just sticking out the back when i dont have anything to pull.

i actually bought mine from an owner that doesnt take care of his vehicles.. all his v8 trucks have never ran on all 8. but i figured i see them for sale all the time for about $5-8k it was a deal i couldnt pass up.. my truck is completely practical for my familys needs and i rather fix something and make it reliable then to have a note on a truck i know nothing about. after this engine change is done, all in the time of 2yrs and 3200 miles it will have new engine and most of the components that are prone to fail, new tranny, rebuilt tcase and all new suspension in the front.. only thing major left will be the rear end.. and im sure that will blow in the next year or so..(i drive alot in sand)

for your receiver problem, spray it with *********** oil (pb blaster). keep spraying it for a couple days and do what you have been doing.. or just pull the 4 bolts that hold the hitch on and remove the hitch all together.

I'm pretty sure the people who owned mine before the guy i bought it off of took good care of it because it was in fairly decent shape. Cant say that about the guy i got it from though. This thing was tore up in the Three or four months he had it. I mean every door handle was broke off, inside and out, carpet was trashed, and not to mention the mud/ concrete i've been chiseling off since ive had it. Im pretty sure they got it stuck in some deep a** mud and fried the rear end and tranny in the procces of getting it out. I dont have any idea how these off roaders keep their trucks clean. I pressure washed it and scrubbed but everytime i get under it i still pull out 20+ pounds of mud. About the rear end i though great here goes a fortune but i got my bearing kit off flea bay for just over 85 bucks, ring and pinion for 125 and a brand new complete g80 for 275. only thing i needed from the dealer was a new yoke because my old one wouldnt hold my u joints in place 125 so i rebuilt the whole thing in one night for just over 600. I think its a good deal because i kept finding the in the bone yard for 5-600 with 150,000+
