Is this how the rear springs are supposed to be?

Seems normal, some guys can just pop them into place, others have to get a little more room with the shocks and or sway bar links disconnected. Unless you're jumping the truck, you'll likely never have to worry about it.

The springs have more than enough room to be removed without disconnecting the shocks or the sway-bar which seems odd to me.

Well, it is a PPV and they had shorter springs if memory serves and time has likely shrunk them down at least a little.
