I'm planning on upgrading the stock head unit and soon and was wondering if the max power output on the head unit should be lower than the max output on my speakers?

I would think so unless you want to crank the stereo and blow your speakers.

It's actually better to have more amplifier power than the speakers can handle For dynamic headroom. However you will be hard pressed to find a aftermarket speaker that doesn't handle more power than a radio can provide. Which is why so many people add a 4 channel amp to their door speakers

Kenwood KFC-1694ps, and after looking at the box again I realized I confused the rms power with the max power

what ever your powering your speakers with either head unit or amplifier you always want the amp or head units rms wattage to be more then the RMS of the speakers your powering. if the head unit puts out 50 watts rms then you want your speakers to be 35 watts rms

4x80 is max output....you need the nominal/RMS rating. You don't power a sub from a headunit. And as others have said, it's better to have an amp with more power than the speakers.
