Just joined this group (Thank you for the warm welcome) As the title says, I just purchased a 2018 Denali for the wife. She loved the color, Mineral Metallic (433B) Haha, we all have different criteria, for me it was the 6.2 w/10 spd. and the towing specs. Carfax shows good service history all done by local dealer where purchased. I will be towing a 27 ft Travel Trailer a couple of times a year, otherwise it will just get normal use by my wife with a couple thousand miles/year.
The GMC dealer I bought it from offers a 3 year factory warranty for 3100.00 and change. My question is, should I purchase the coverage? I will do all regular maintainence myself but the finance guy at the dealership says even if one electronic gizmo goes out
I could spend a grand for repair/replace. Seems like cheap insurance to me. What say you guys? TIA
Billy

Beautiful truck!

I've never purchased that kind of insurance, so I cannot help you there. Other folks will chime in though with their views, as this topic has been discussed here before. Search here a bit on 'factory warranty'

Thank you, I will do that. This is a very robust and well built forum BTW. I like that "previous or similar thread (?)" feature, kind of a "look here dummy before you post something that's been beat to death already", which I am often guilty of. ;)

There are two camps on this. A lot of folks here, swear by them if they’re from a reputable company. Any problems with the cylinder deactivation on your engine, could easily eat up that initial cost.

On the other hand, there are folks like me who just prefer to be our own insurance, confident that we can deal with whatever comes up, at minimal parts cost. So far, that strategy has worked very well for me and saved me a bundle.

For the warranty depends on your skill set. If you have a good scanner and are comfortable replacing modules and stuff like power lift gates, seats, Mag ride shocks, then id skip. I have a 2015 LTZ I bought used in 2019? That I had to make a good amount of repairs on that I did DIY. If I paid for a shop it would have been more than the warranty cost for sure. Although this truck was bought with 90k on the clock and now has 160k as its used heavily. Lots of short trips as well with 5 kids in it at times so it’s being “taxed” lol.

I’ve replaced to date:
4 fuel injectors and fuel rail
Plugs
Rear mag shocks
Air compressor
Stab control module
Side detection modules
Power lift actuators
Passenger window regulator
Rear seat recline motor
Wiring repair to harnesses
Had to pull intake manifold to clean intake valves and added catch can.

Now needs brakes (all new rotors and pads) and front mag shocks. Will do that this summer

$3100 seems pretty steep to me for the "what-if" insurance feel good. We bought our 2017 Denali with 41k on it in 2019 and they offered the almost the same exact sales pitch - but for $1700. Platinum coverage, no deductible, wheels and tires until 100k, etc.

We opted for it to make my wife feel better long term since it would be her DD and a road trip machine. I will say it paid for itself twice over what we paid for it. I'm usually not an extended warranty guy though.
1. 2 tires covered
2. Leaking trans lines covered
3. Front mag ride struts covered due to oil puddles on my garage floor
4. Seat vibrators on driver seat
5. Complete radio/HVAC module replacement

it's a gamble just like gambling, 50/50 chance it will pay off, the benefit being it could pay off quite well in the event of a engine failure, transmission failure, etc
for that low of miles $3100 is a bit high I would try to negotiate that price down, the sales person is getting a cut of it, you can squeeze them a bit.
keep in mind the factory warranty is expired due to age.
just don't take a low tier warranty those are useless, take the high or mid tier or nothing.
high tier generally covers bumper to bumper, mid is generally powertrain only, low tier is garbage and covers basically nothing and gives them a "out" to decline coverage due to legal fine print. .

In any case READ it so you have a understanding of what is and what it NOT covered. little things like seals and gaskets make all the difference

Key words here, READ. Gambling is hardly ever 50/50. House usually has the odds and with the extended warranty the carveouts are what give them the favor. I am curious of more details on the warranty they offer. What does the mileage top out at, 100k? What electronics are covered? What aftermarket mods will null your coverage? If they offer a high mileage powertrain warranty beyond 100k miles, that is what I would want. Not too concerned about electronics but that is just me.

I take it you have never bought a warranty on a vehicle? unless it is a very good warranty provider then most electronics are not covered unless explicitly stated in the coverage and even then it can be limited to very specific things. aftermarket mods are not covered in pretty much ANY case, but what they don't know wont hurt them and unless it was a obvious bolt on mod there never going to know, most warranty's are no more than 60k (starting at existing mileage and excluding any factory warranty remaining) unless it is a gm cpo warranty in which case they can or may do a 100k powertrain.
so for instance if it was a 2022 and at 40k, then (for example) a warranty would be 60k miles covering you up to 100k, excluding the first 20k or to 2027 which would still be factory warranty to 60k or 45k whichever the case and whichever comes first.
in that case they are off the hook at the beginning it would only kick in after the factory warranty has expired.
in some cases you can come out better in the long run buying a gently used CPO with a better than new warranty.

I have bought extended warranties but not for a GM vehicle. My reference in regards to the aftermarket was not that the aftermarket product would be covered but would it affect the warranty validity. Several providers offer electronics coverage you just have to buy the more expensive plan.
