2020 Tahoe Z71 Midnight Edition. Love the truck, but all the talk of the stock TC going bad and destroying the transmission was weighing on me. 55K miles currently, and plan on doing more traveling out West this year. I thought about just buying a new Tahoe, but like I said, I love the truck, and it has everything I need. Ordered with the 3.42 rear end which you can't get any more, I do some light towing, but nothing real heavy.

Discussed with a good transmission shop in my area, and they confirmed they've seen lots of TC issues with the 6L80 at about 70K miles. So, I decided to just proactively have a better Billet TC installed now.

I've attached a pic of the invoice for anyone thinking of doing this. They also did the Sure Cool mod for the bypass valve, and did a Trans Go Shift Kit upgrade, apparently, that's a weak link also.

I got two different quotes from two good transmission shops, and they were pretty close.

You might also have the engine’s rear main oil seal replaced while the transmission is out. Very cheap to do now but very expensive to pull the transmission again in the future.
I suggest using the $40 upgraded thermostat ending part 86774933 with its lower 150 degree opening temperature instead of the Sure Cool mod. It sends oil to the coolers after operating temperature is reached similar to the way your engine thermostat works. Important during cooler weather.

Another simple modification to make your transmission last longer is to purchase a DOD (displacement on demand) eliminator. It is a little $40 module that plugs into the diagnostic port under your steering column. It keeps your engine in 8 cylinder mode. Your torque converter is made to constantly slip somewhat all the time. In 8 cylinder mode it only slips 1/2 as much as 4 cylinder mode. Of course if you want the maximum life of your new converter, have it tuned to totally eliminate the converter clutch slip.
Your other option is to buy an HP Tuners tuning device and tune it yourself.
