Just noticed today I started my Yukon and it blew a little bit of blue smoke. Its a 2000 Yukon 2500. It did seem to stop after driving it. Is this the indication of my valve guides and seals wearing out?

its an older trick but i dont see why it wouldnt work on a newer vehicle, and there very well may be a simpler way of checking. but if you have a compression test guage, you can use a little oil in the plug hole, rotate the engine and determine if its valves or rings. or ask around, there may be a common fail on these. im relatively new to the 5.3 so i dont know alot of the tricks as of yet.

Check your PCV valve...if it's malfunctioning you could be using more oil.

If it only puffed blue smoke once probably not a big deal...if it does so regularly may be an indicator of something else.

A compression test will not reveal a light blue smoke problem if it is in fact the guides and seals. It will show if the compression is compromised by ring problems or a stuck/burned valve problem and if is that severe the smoke will likely not go away when driving. The pcv valve could be kaput but typically the problem he/she describes is the valve guides and seals. Keep an eye on the oil level and check to see if gets worse. How many miles on the engine?

It has a little over 141000 miles on it now. Seems here lately a lot of parts are going bad on it, just part of owning an older vehicle I guess. It runs too good for it to be any compression problems. It does respond well to taking it out and running it through the gears, but my wallet doesn't.

Well then check the pcv system and I would bet it is the guides and seals. Typical higher mileage problem but can go that way for a long time with just the need to add oil every now and then.

I felt the same way as you last year. Ended up tearing the whole block down and doing a rebuild. Turned out to be the seals. Once you turn off the motor the oil seeps past and drops into the combustion chamber. The type of oil you're running might also help to minimize the loss for the time being.

Yes. Same thing happened in my '89 Jimmy a couple years back. I went ahead and had a local independent guy tear down everything north of the block and rebuild and he said every gasket and bolt looked like it was in great shape, and original. This was at approx 155,000 miles.

If I were you, I'd just have the valve guides and seals replaced and call it good. Probably no need to do a complete teardown like I did.

I will probably just do this if I don't sell it. I love driving this thing but I really miss having a truck :/

Thanks guys
