I am getting ready to paint a few things on the hoe: dash, grill etc. Looked at a lot of threads and have seen different opinions. Some people say to use a primer for this paint. But, since it has a plastic bonding agent in it wouldn't the primer make this paint not stick as well? I'm not against a little sanding and good prep work but with this paint it would seem a primer is not necessary. Correct?

The can also says this stuff wont chip, so would a clear coat not be necessary if it has the right sheen right out of the can?

I used it to paint plastic components in the engine bay.
I did not use a primer nor did I sand the pieces down.
I did, however, wash them very thoroughly to get all grease/oil/dirt off.

The paint went on well and looks nice.

I did use a clear coat though, as the parts are subject to more crap in the engine bay and the gloss clear made it simply look nicer / more shiny than the gloss white by itself.

As far as not chipping... I've had it for a little over a month and it still looks brand new. I have had experience of it chipping/flaking, in the past, when painted on flexible surfaces (wire bundle covers, etc)

So the paint worked great on a scrap I had laying around. But I tried a satin clear coat hand had some trouble with it, didnt cover completely. Guess I just need some practice!

I'm glad people have had good luck with it, because I haven't. I tried painting interior pieces on my other car and it turned out crappy. I tried it without primer and with primer, both ways were prepped too.

I have painted many items with Krylons Plastic paint with great results. you don't need a primer, but clean very very thuroughly, and using a paint prep spray is always a good thing. Also, use Krylon's clear coat also, holds up well inside and out.

There should be a couple out there, one is DupliColor Prep-Spray. It's a Wax and Grease remover. I mean if you can't find any Prep-Spray, use HOT water with soap, and then rinse all very good. You usually don't need to sand, but it never hurts, and also if the plastic has little dimples in it, sanding will remove that. But if you do sand, I would highly suggest using a prep-spray, because the "releasing wax" used to make the plastic can be brought to the surface once sanded.

But Krylon's plastic paint works very well from my personal experience, with no need to prime. They do make a plastic primer that works very well also

Thanks for the info Austin! What about adhesion promoter? I will have to check napa tomorrow. I was meaning prep spray as in the adhesion promoter, not as primer or a wash. Sorry if I didnt make it clear. Kinda re read my post like WTF?
