My 07 Denali started surging, sputtering, died then decided to run fine until it does it again. Anyway vatozone pulled a cam sensor code and they are showing me the internal sensor or what looks like a reluctor type thing with the magnet on it which is what the external sensor reads?? So my question is should I do the external sensor or has the other side been as issue as well? Thanks in advance Jason

Ohhh code was p0011 if I remember correctly.

Your cam position sensor on your vehicle senses the tabs on the VVT cam phaser.

A couple other possibilities could be a failed VVT valve

Or maybe your VVT actuator solenoid.

To replace the bottom two, you need to remove the water pump for sure. Can’t remember if that’s the case for cam position sensor.

I'm pretty sure 07 has no vvt
the older LS's had the cam sensor in the back of the intake manifold near the
oil pressure sending unit.. But I think your L92 just has the sensor in
the timing cover.., just no vvt

I hope you are right
Your 2007 Denali should have a 6.2L with VVT. Mine did. The 5.3’s didn’t get them until 2009 or 2010, but the Denali’s with 6.2’s had them in 2007.
I hope you are wrong lol. I will take a closer look tomorrow and report back

im thinking if the vvt phaser was failing it would not kill the engine, it only affects cam timing 8-12 degrees depending on the year. you need better testing, opening up the front cover is a can of worms, your there so oil pump, chain, tensioner, phaser, solenoid, sensor. YIKES! you have to know the "exact" tc. get ahold of a tech2 and rule nothing out til you isolate it. it may be somthing simple. looking down from the top behind the water pump are there two components, one center and one to the right? if yes than vvt.

One more question...I have a trip that has to happen tomorrow. Funny enough the cel is off and it seems fine but what's the possibility of this thing grenading if it looses timing or something weird with vvt/cam sensor?

Also when we did the trans the battery was completely dead and had been for a couple months. Could I be stuck in some weird relearn procedure?

all vehicles can potentially break down, good ones break in the driveway or at the vatozone, not so good ones do it in the fast lane on the interstate. your car is talking to you, my advice is to listen to it and if cash will allow get a rental car for the trip. the relearn is a longshot and should not create your issue. it would be worth checking battery connections since you just did that.
