I have an 03 Yukon Denali.

I have a tranny gauge and oem tranny cooler. On HOT days, 95+ degrees, when cruising the needle will be a hair over the 200degree mark. I am not too worried there.

But when I towed a car from SanAntonio to Ky, the thing was about 235degrees reading on the OEM gauge.


I still feel the temps are a bit higher than necessary and I am thinking about running another cooler inline with the factory one, OR maybe just replace it with a better one.

I do a good amount of towing time to time.


Anyone here ever pay attn. to you gauge readings? I am just kinda wanting to see if you all have the same readings as I do.

Try to keep it at 180 or below. You'll usually have to install an aftermarket cooler to get there. Use a stacked-plate design similar to the radiator. Those cheap tube-in-fin designs don't cool near as well and have a larger pressure drop across them.

Temps in the 200-250 or so range won't damage the hard parts of the trans. What it does is, over time, cause the fluid to break down MUCH faster and the electrical parts (wiring, solenoids, etc), seals, and gaskets will harden and become brittle. There must be 30 or more o-rings in this transmission and all it takes is one of them going out to cause havoc.

At 300 and above you start cooking stuff. Usually by then it'll start puking fluid out of the vent tube.
