Long story short, my wife and I just bought a 07 Denali XL.

I have had pretty good luck with GM this will be my 5th GM vehicle.

With that said it has some quirks, most of which I have had luck googling about how to fix them.

The lift gate however does something I havent read about. When you open the gate with the key fob it opens and goes all the way to the top, then shuts itself. Everything I have read, including the TSB mentions something about it going 1/3 or 1/2 way then doing this. I wondering if this is the same issue and mine is just different then EVERYBODY else's? Or is there something else going on? I checked the manual button on the overhead console also.

I also have the button on the lift gate not working to close it. It makes some noise in the latch, but does nothing. I have read this is the latch itself? It's pretty low on the priority list but wanting to get fix nonetheless

Thanks

My lift gate just did that a couple weeks ago. Ended up being a bad lift gate strut. Changed both while I was at it. The motor will close the hatch when it pulls too many amps because the struts aren't helping.

What do you mean "it shuts itself"? I think the programmable tail gates were not an option for the GMT 900 models. We have a 2016 Cadillac SRX that we can program to open at a pre-determined height. Is that what you mean? I agree with trying the struts first. I replaced them on our 2008 Tahoe from pep boys because of their lifetime warranty.

What I am mean is it literally extends all the way up, gets to the top and then immediately tries to shut. At that point you either force it back up with your hand which seems really bad for it, or if you press the "shut" button on the tailgate it stays up... which is what I don't understand because that button doesn't actually work to shut the liftgate?

Everything I read points to the latch, but that struts make sense except fixing the close button on the tailgate. It does the same from the drivers console. I can open it with that button, it opens then tries to shut, and I can make it stay open by pressing it again. Oddly enough though, after that if I press the button again, it will not shut (same thing with the tailgate button) ??? Still thinking struts? or is this a latch issue? I would like to get t figured out, its an annoyance for sure, but its a safety issue with my wife and 10 year old daughter getting stuff out of there.

I had a lot of the issues many people are talking about with the rear hatch on my 08 Denali.

I found my issue was the latch. I loosened the screws enough to pull the latch as far back as I could then retightened the screws.

Problem solved! That was almost two years ago.

I know on my 99 for some reason the latch can be moved forward or backwards via a bolt. Doesn't make sense to me but as the previous poster said I'd look into that first.

I was having problems just getting my glass to close
