Liftgate Stuck

I am working on a 2015 Yukon XL Denali for a friend to prepare it for sale. Nevertheless the Liftgate will not open. It will unlatch, open and inch or two and that is all, does not automagically reclose as I see others have reported. If I close it, it does engage to close and pulled fully but never hear anything while opening except the unlatching mechanism. Also once unlatched I cannot force it open, I am concerned that I would break something. I purchased a new Acuator and support strut however cannot locate how to open the liftgate for replacement. Is it simply removing the bottom clips on each side? Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
