I'm thinking about upgrading to HIDs and doing away with my stock bulbs. Do I need to buy a kit? I want it done right, so I'll probably get it done professionally. But what is the best way to go? And what is the longest bulb that can be used for license plate and my puddle lights under my mirrors?

If you want it right defiantly need to do projectors. I haven't upgraded my self so I can't help ya with bulbs etc. retro solutions or something like that has a great website and customer service. Hid planet can also offer some great advise. I will say I put a cheap set in an f250 I was selling cheap ebay set with housing light went everywhere but where ya needed it. Wasn't impressed.

I have run HID kits in several of my vehicles with decent results, but not the Tahoe. The stock housings on the GMT900 tahoes have "decent" cutoff with HID kits...but far from ideal. They are perfect candidates for a projector retrofit though, lots of options and tons of people have done them so there are many resources to use.

Bottom line: you can spend $50 on a drop-in kit (the pros and cons of which have been beaten to death elsewhere on the internetz), or spend several hundred on a professional retro. The results will be FAR superior with a proper retrofit, but it largely depends on your budget. Just know that even with the lights adjusted down, there will be glare hitting other drivers on the road if you use a drop-in kit.

As for the puddle lights and license plate bulbs, check out vleds.com - they have a tons of options based on bulb type.

For the license plate and puddle lamps get the 5 SMD LED lights in bulb size 194. For the HID's, to do them properly you need projectors. Look at blackflamecustoms.com for examples. Retrofitsource.com for more info, and don't buy the cheap $50 HID kits on eBay. They will work but only for a few months, maybe a year max. I tried to cheap out on em and it always bit me in the ass and either the ballast would burn out or the bulb would go out. I got my retrofit projectors from Vision Auto Works, a seller on eBay for $710 shipped and took almost a month to build with upgraded bulbs and decent ballasts. BFC charges about $1000 for em but i've heard good things about them. You can even get quad projectors where the high beams are also projectors but that can get your cost of the retrofit up to 1500-2000. This subject has also been beaten to death on this forum and if you use the search feature you will found countless threads on it.
