I don't think it would be a bad thing either on the Mercedes but dumping what's in a catch can back into the motor due to catch cans sweat and have condensation making water a big no no.

Verify your application, J&L Catch Can

While there are others out there, many cheaper, this is a stupid easy plug and play installation. No cutting, maybe a few 10 MM sockets, propery snap connections, hoses are the proper them and it seems to work well and is good quality. Maybe a 15 minute installation if you have the tools at hand and a step stool.

Are you asking about one of the stock ones from an early 80's Mercedes? You did quote a message that was talking about an early 80's Mercedes oil separator that returned the oil to the crankcase.

That'd be WAY more time, effort and money to install one of those vice just buying one of the MANY commercially available catch cans meant for a new Tahoe, but if you really want to go down that silly rabbit hole, then look up any Mercedes with a OM 617 (like a 81-85 300TD for example). All of them will have a factory oil separator built into the center of the air cleaner assembly (see pic below). Personally, I'd just buy one of the several that are out there meant/ marketed for the Tahoe before trying to adapt something that's 40 years old, but have fun I suppose.

The chemical difference between crankcase motor oil and what's in the catch can
is the reason why catch cans exist.
Otherwise, why not just pour what's in the catch can back into the crankcase?

DON'T DO THAT.
Why would you want to return that off-white stuff in this pic to the crankcase?
Don't forget to click on the pic to get a good look at the mung under the 'soy sauce'.
I can't see a reason why it would necessarily be a bad thing to return the oil to the crankcase
(assuming all the lines were cleaned / flushed after assembly of course).

A big no no.
There's a reason why Mercedes stopped doing it - probably heat cycling.

Makes me wonder where the catch can actually belongs,
but definitely convinces me that catch cans should be de rigeur.
