So I currently am on an extended test drive with a dealer on an 01 Yukon SLT. They gave it to me for a day to get it checked out and make sure everything is sound. I plan on taking it to my uncle's shop and have him look at it. It currently sits at 216xxx miles. I realize that's a lot. What are some issues that I should be looking for? Everything so far is in really good shape. No tears in the leather. The body is straight. Good tires. The engine runs good and the transmission is smooth. One thing I did notice was there is a slight transmission whine. It's very very quiet though. This will be my first automatic vehicle I've owned though so not sure if that is normal or not? It was so quiet in fact that my wife didn't notice it even after trying to point it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend having the dealer run a "VIS Report" with the VIN#, this will tell you if there are any outstanding recall items and will also show the history of dealer service repairs and recalls that have been done. That can give you a good idea of the how mechanically sounds the truck was when newer.
As for the whine, I am still new to the auto 4x4 myself, but I have been told by a few people that a whining like that is most likely the bearings in the front differential. If that IS the issue it would have to come out and the case halves taken apart to install the new bearings. But like I said, I am new to that fix and would not really know how to actually diagnose that that is the issue. I have never had one do that on any of my other trucks. But I was told that it is more commonly on the auto 4x4 vehicles.
I would of course ask for a Carfax as well.
Hope that helps a little, but maybe someone with more experience with the auto 4x4 can elaborate on how to diagnose that.

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely check into that. Hopefully it's not the diff. It definitely is not loud at all. If the air conditioner is on you can't hear it. You have to listen very carefully to hear it. It could be me just being paranoid but I'd rather just be safe on it. As for recalls I called the dealer and they said it is all up to date.

I'm the same way, I hear new interesting sounds every day and if I am in a bad mood it sounds like it is falling apart...lol It is VERY often, just me... Especially with a possible new purchase.

my front diff was bad. I couldnt hear or feel it with the radio on. But running quitly at maybe 40mph, coast and then just lightly touch the throttle, lightly. If you hear or feel a vibration, for me it was the front diff. Note I have AWD. so it was driving the front axle. I would think you might have to put it into 4 hi to get the same effect. I wouldnt go over 45 then. When I drained the fluid I got metal. Hope that helps

i got my 01 slt xl last year... the only issues ive had are the 02 sensors, replaced both cats, also have been having wiring issues with the air bag thats in the drivers seat and i replaced the valve cover seals... the only things i have left to replace on it is a o-ring on the oil filter housing and the electronic brake control module.. other than that she runs smooth and i couldnt be happier... my vehicle was a 1 owner and im pushin 240xxx with over 6000 hours on the clock... another thing u might want to keep an eye on will be the gauge cluster.. if u see any gauges acting funny id recommend swapping it with an eky cluster thats been rebuilt.. in addition with that cluster u will obtain a tranny temp gauge which will really come in in handy if u ever plan on hauling anything
