well obviously a AWD is going to handle much better in snow. Its a night and day difference compared to a 2WD. Is it necessary, probably not. I live in michigan and rarely see enough snow that actually warrants a AWD. But you can get going much quicker without the slipping sliding. The biggest quirks that I know on these trucks are broken motor mounts, broken exhaust manifold bolts, hub bearings need to be replaced every 100k. Check and make sure all of the electric door locks work, the actuators tend to go bad. If it has the air ride that goes bad at 100k also. You may not have that though on an slt.
