Lowered and towing

I just lowered my 22’ Tahoe RST (5.3L) and threw on some 24” wheels too. Tires remained a similar size as stock. I’m looking at getting a travel trailer in the future and wanted to know how if at all this would affect towing capacity.

I know this question has been asked but I have seen so many different responses mainly with older vehicles.

I’m just looking to see what I should consider when looking at travel trailers? Hitch options? Sway bars? Etc…also, if I should flip the hitch over for a more level load to lessen the sag if that makes sense. Any help / input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ill do my best here. Your wheels and tire are the same OD as stock, then there is no change there so all good.



Depending on trailer size and weight. Anything over about 5 to 7k gross trailer weight needs a weight distribution hitch on your model. The rear suspension is a bit soft for towing heavy loads without it.

When setting up any trailer on your vehicle, the tongue should be slightly elevated when loaded to almost level, No matter the level of squat you have. So, adjust hitch accordingly to your trailer needs.

If you have air suspension in the rear, or automatic load leveling, then it will adjust and put you back to level. My Esky and Burb had it and it's a great thing for towing for sure but can cause some hard ride sometimes when load is a bit off.

Sway bar I would suggest if you have a bigger camper or trailer, normally about 20' in length is my go to for adding sway control, but a proper set up hitch and towing for the trailer is key to keeping sway down, the sway bar then is basically used for stability when getting passed by 18 wheelers or in high wind situations.



Vehicle mod that would help out on towing for your vehicle. A larger Rear sway bar on the vehicle will help drastically if you're looking on towing alot. Being lowered does help get the center of gravity lower and helps the towing experience but you lose some articulation on the rear being lowered, so take great care on big bumps and grade transitions.
