I hear that vinyl holds up pretty well actually. I'm sure you'd be fine if you got it now and maybe the installer has some sort of an extended warranty for it that you could get.

A lot of vinyl manufacturers back their products for years. So be sure to ask about that. Some of those I've used at work are along the 7 year warranty timeframe.

My suggestion would be to have it scuffed and sprayed with satin clear. I don't think you'll have the same results with a vinyl overlay.

Vinyl wraps do not hold up anywhere close to as good as paint does. Even matte/flat painted cars hold up better. They can easily tear from car washes and rocks that would normally scratch paint.
If it is installed correctly, hand washed, and kept off the highway it should be good to go though.
