Some folks say there is a benefit to adding the infamous MSD 6AL + Blaster Coil to our trucks. Others opt only for the Blaster Coil, while others say it's a waste of money all together.

There is some consensus that if you have a truck that runs well and you stay on top of your tune ups, there is no need for this additional equipment. However, a few folks still swear by this upgrade for waking up their trucks.

For this poll - assume the truck is running well and you keep it tuned up.

Does the benefit of adding the 6AL ($165) and/or Blaster Coil ($40) outweigh the cost?

You can make multiple choices on this Poll. If you select "Yes", please select which piece(s) of equipment you believe is beneficial.

I would like to see what specifically a MSD box does to increase performance.

My understanding is, it bumps the voltage to the coil to increase the voltage of the coil output. At the same time, it creates multiple sparks instead of one big one.

According to the laws of physics, when voltage goes up, amperage goes down.
Amperage could be defined as the “umph” of the spark.

After the initial spark ignites the fuel, the subsequent sparks are just engulfed in the explosion from the first spark.

If it is such a great idea, why don’t the new cars have them from the factory.

OK, the reason is, the ultimate scenario is one coil per cylinder. More time to build up voltage before each spark, instead of dividing up the coil’s duties between 8 cylinders.

As was mentioned earlier, if you need a major tune up and you install one of these MSD boxes, you will notice a improvement. If your ignition system is in good shape, probably will not notice anything.

If you want to know more about high voltage and how it works, Magnecor has some great info on their website. They make premium spark plug wires.

Not trying to cause any trouble, just looking for the facts. Why spend money on things that don’t matter…………:)
