This has mostly been my impression as well.
In fact some years ago I was at a show somewhere and they had a display showing the sparks on one of these plugs when they first came out. I think the first such plugs were called Splitfire or something like that and all they did was take the regular ground electrode and split it in two and put a little pad of platinum on each of the split legs.
I had the same thoughts and told the guy at the booth so. He said that yes, with a standard coil only one of the grounds may be used but with a big enough coil, like some of those big MSD coils back then both grounds wild be used and he went on to demonstrate it.
The reason I ask now is that its been about 15 years since I was really into that kind of stuff and then OEM systems are so much better, with much more spark voltage than back then. So, I thought I would just check if anyone had any better luck with them now.
My gut says no, or the OEMs would be using them.
