You should be able to get to those lights easily enough. I couldn't figure it out either and was thinking the same (yet another stupid engineers idea) but alas! I laid on my back looked up stuffed my hand in there felt around a bit and voila! Real easy actually.
Maybe take your phone with the flash and get a couple pics, you'll see them. I am constantly taking pics of things like that as the camera can see a whole hell of a lot better than I can and i can't seem to ever get that zoom function to work on my eyeballs either like it does on these digital boxes.
