My SUV INFO::
1999 Yukon Denali 5.7L V8 4x4

hello , and just wanted to say this is my first SUV.

Its so easy to work on this kind of TOY.

ok, I

purchase this yukon to Pull my 5,000 pounds boat. i belive my towing capacity is 8.500 pounds..

i have a 1999 Yukon Denali V8 5.7L.. is that good or great to Pull my hevy Boat?

------
When i purchase it i have a big problem with steering. So i have replace the following.

*Steering Sensor
*Both Rear Shock
*Both Front Shock With Max Control From Autonzone which is the best they offer.

My steering still suck and so dangerous to drive because it dance all over the highway if it has a dip.

I research your forum and found out it maybe the steering sensor..
I replace that. The steering seems little bit better. but still have same problem.

-----

i check The steering Shaft for play. and i have about 1 inch to 2 inch of Play when i turn the wheel.
So i assume its Steering Gear Box is the problem?

What you guys think?

---------------
Anyone has a PDF Manual for my SUV

Have you checked your front end?
tierods, pitman arm, idlerarm, balljoints, rag joint etc,,,,,,,,, another over looked thing is your alignment as well as tire preasure.
I have replaced everything including the steering gear box w/a AGR quick ratio gear box. Even after doing all this, I still have play.

I have check for Comlete Kit on ebay and it cost about 180 for all steering parts, beside the GearBox i will just replace all of them first..

Yes. i have check. and i see a play on the Arm which connects to the GearBox..

But i dont think that will cuz that much of a play.

When i check the Gear Box for play. i actually seen the Steering Shaft turn about 1 inch before the actual Gearbox turns the ARM to turn the wheel.

i belive its the Gear Box. is it???..

please give me some input." Maybe iam wrong. i dont want to replace gearbox unless i have to.:emotions122:

Also.... a quick question:
Here is the PART LINK: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/1999-GMC-Yukon-Denali-4WD/Sensor-Steering-Wheel-Speed/_/N-jdv2lZ8ijac?filterByKeyWord=Steering+Motion+Sensor&fromString=search
The Steering Motion Sensor Under the Dashboard.. there is no Alignment for that right..
Just Remove the Old one. Put the New one and insert it. ???

Please stop buying from Shitzone.

Buy Doorman from Rock Auto. Better part and hell of alot cheaper.
Since you tow you need to upgrade possibley to a strut combo to giv your rear extra support under tow. So no sagging occurs or very minimal while hauling your toy. Alot of play in the steering wheel could be from a bad pitman and/or idler arm. Check those first. Cheaper and hell of alot easier then replacing the steering box.

1) Mileage of Vehicle
2) PICS!

Sooooo, what's a rag joint? I've already done pitman arm, idler arm, all four ball joints, and all four tierod ends, but I have no clue what a rag joint is?

Sooooo, what's a rag joint? I've already done pitman arm, idler arm, all four ball joints, and all four tierod ends, but I have no clue what a rag joint is?

A rag joint refers to certain flexible joints found on automobiles. They are typically found on steering shafts that connect the steering wheel to the steering gear input shaft, usually at the steering gear end. They provide a small amount of flex for a steering shaft within a few degrees of the same plane as the steering gear input shaft. It also provides some damping of vibration coming from the steering system, providing some isolation for the steering wheel.

This type of joint was also used on drive shafts of 1960s race cars, later being replaced by the constant-velocity joint or driveshafts with pairs of universal joint. Rear-wheel drive cars have commonly used a lengthwise propeller shaft with a rubber doughnut joint at the gearbox end (limited movement) and a universal joint at the rear axle (greater movement). This gives articulation where needed, but also stops some of the vibration being transmitted into the body.

The joint consists of a piece of doughnut shaped rubber with reinforcing cords vulcanized in it, similar to a tire. This disc is bolted or riveted to flanges mounted on the ends of the shafts to connect the steering wheel shaft to the steering gear. The ragged cords can be seen on the edge of this piece of rubber, hence the term "rag joint". The bolt holes themselves are often reinforced by steel tubes moulded into the doughnut.

The origins of this form of universal joint are from early vehicles that used a disk of thick leather as a similar flexible joint. These were used into the 1920s. As rubber technology improved (particularly for its resistance to spilled mineral oils), it was possible to replace the leather by something longer-lasting. An older vehicle with loose steering or "play in the steering wheel" is often found to have a worn out rag joint. One can reach inside the cab and wiggle the steering wheel while watching the rag joint move without the input shaft moving, this is unnacceptable and needs to be replaced.

Like said. How many miles are on the vehicle?
Also said, replace the pitman arm and idler first.

Your gear box could need adjusting.
I would not change the gear box until you have gone through the simple and obvious parts.

The sensor has a notch that it slides into. It only goes one way, its easy. Getting at the harness was a pain for me, the plugs had some kind of foam tape on it. I couldnt unplug it, thankfully I was replacing my ignition harness anyway, hah.

For towing I would look into helper bags.

foreverfalcon40,
Check that link, it is a Dorman product.

I have check for helper bags. and I sure will need that. this whole SUV seat on a Leaf spring and a new shock. i dont think that will be safe until i put some helper bags .. do i need one with air control or just solid. is there a solid helper bags which will help?

Also the engine has 229k

i have replace the Engine with 20W-50 with lucas.. Oil Pressure was high. not to high, but still good.

Also the truck has alot of miles and i dont think the valve and any parts has been properly clean.. so i will SeaFOAM the whole ENGINE. to clean Piston chamber and Valves. then do a Fuel Injection cleaning from Walmart for $18.

like i said its my first SUV. it fell strong to me. it sound nice to me! with the helper bags. can i Pull my 24" 5,000 Boat.. Also forgot to mention it has a 24' Rims..

thanks for the reply..

P.S.. i will just change that two part you mention before i even buy a gearbox..

I will POST Picture of my SUV soon.. my kid Damage my PHONE

Also.. how do you adjust a GearBox? Loose the Nut and Turn the allen screw 1/4 Turn Clockwise. ?? i assume all GearBox is the same.. is it the same with my 1999 Denali 4x4

I have helper bags, they are great. You dont need an onboard system, I use a portable compressor I bought off the Snap-On truck last year just for my helper bags.

I would definately recommend a complete tune-up, especially if you dont know the previous owner or have no records of the service history.

You should be able to tow your boat with the helper bags, you can also get double bellow bags that can handle more pressure. I think mine can handle 100PSI max, I've had 90 in them with no problems.

I'm not exactly sure how to adjust the gear box, I'll do a search around and try to find some info for you. It should be the same.
