So, I was looking at the fuel fill cap today and it looked old and tattered and beat up. before it got to the point of causing a code, I decided to get a new one. I looked up a Genuine GM one at RA. part number GT330. With the shipping and 5% RA discount, was gonna be about $35. I then punched in the same part number at my local AZ and the initial price was a little more but I get a military 10% discount and it will be $26.09 BUT when I punched in the part number, AZ also told me I needed a housing part #15289921: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=7230952&cc=0&pt=1001719&jsn=1708

It is the cup area where the fuel fill tube is and where the little cap tether attaches. AZ was not "suggesting" it, they were saying I needed it. You just gotta look out for yourself.

By the way, I got the pic and link at RA but when I punched in the GM part # at AZ, it was "Not Available".

Thank goodness they stooped using gas caps. It still kind of freaks me out when I go to get gas and there’s no cap.

Pretty sure you don't need the housing, just the cap would be fine. I see no reason why you'd need to replace it--except if it's physically damaged. Just AZ trying to make more money. Have you tried asking @915_Tahoe what the GM books say about it?

Engineering notes state:
(must also order housing)

That's all it says, I'm thinking the gas cap is a design change. I have sold caps that required the housing aswell, but customer never buys it. So I would say you should be ok without changing it out.

I know I do not need the additional part. It is just a sales come on. The thing that was weird, is that AZ says it is needed and then the part is unavailable thru them. My part, that the tether attaches to, is just fine.

I was taking the fuel tank out of my '89 Cutlass and the cap fell apart in my hand. I had an old fill tube for a '97 Dodge Dakota laying around and the cap off it fit just fine. You can probably find a similar cap at the bone yard. I've only seen a couple of different thread patterns so a replacement should be easy to find.

I installed the new cap today. The thing is, it is not a threaded cap. You drop it in and it turns 1/4 turn to the right and then start clicking.

The old tether had a push clip that held a round loop to the hole in the cap that they were trying to sell. The hole was about 3/8" diameter. The new tether had a "T" at the end. Just had to fold the "T" against the tether and push thru the hole and then the "T" sprung out and holds the tether in place.
