ok i got this tahoe with 189000k 4x4 recently rebuilt trans all full set of tires. it runs like a top a/c is ice cold leaks a lil coolant but thats cool i keep an eye on it. when i got it there was a gently hum in the drive line, but it had all mix matched tires so i attributed it to that. got full set of tires it got a lil better. 4x4 engages smoothly, and i used it recently to get up a steep incline in the rain pullin maybe 1000 lbs on a trailer. afterwards the hummin was a growl and an intermitant ban on acceleration bout 25 miles after that i went to accelerate BANG!!!! i felt like the drive shaft snapped it drives but grinds and bangs very consistantly i was right down the steer from home in 2x4 its horrible i cant do 5mph in 4x4 i can do 25 with out it sounding like its gonna explode. got there and smelled burnt fluid, not trans i know that smell. both shafts in place tight no play any thought or ideas ? also i have heard that you can turn it into a 2x4 in someway any info? i am brokes and just need to be able to drive it my buddy owns a lil shop so i got a place to work i need to konw if i can remove the t/c or some thin please help

I drove mine when mine grenaded could only do about 15 pushing it. Noisy as hell but I drove it. anyway. Definitely sounds like the rear end.
That is exactly what mine did on the freeway doing 80mph+ thought someone rear ended me the whole back end hoped up.

TIME for some upgrade:D

Pull the diff cover and see what your working with. or to find out if it is in the diff do what I did and jack the rear end up disconnect the drive shaft start it put it in gear and if there is no noise then it is in your rear if the noise is still present then it is further up the drive line.

I think while in 4x4 you are dividing the power and torque so there is not much power being put on the rear at that time.

I agree, sounds like the rear to me. pull that cover and look around. It should be real obvious if somehting is up. Check the teeth on the gears and look for chunks as the fluid drains

When i first got my Tahoe the same thing happened to me.I let my friend drive it back home and 9 miles out of Rochester the rear end broke.

I think my friend was in somewhat of a hurry cuz he was also doing 80+ mph on the highway.I did mention to him "do you hear and feel that vibration"? He's like "oh thats probaly just a bad U-joint".Well he was coming up on a car pretty quick so he goosed the throttle to go by him then BANG... I told him to quickly pull over and get the f*ck off the road.I first thing i looked at was the driveshaft. It was still intact and connected.I then went to the back of the vehicle.Sure enough my rear end was on fire, really it was on fire and in flames lol.I grabbed a rag and patted out the fire.

We sat on the side of the 390 for over 5 hours untill i finally got a tow all the way back to Franklinville...

BTW my vehicle would not move at all in any gear. The rear gears were 100% shot and i only have a 2WD.

I replaced it with a used rear end from a junk yard.

The negative: the used rear end is a open diff....:Boo:

The positive: the used rear end had a steeper gear than my stocker :)

My stock gear was a 3.08 in a posi rear, the used rear had 3.42's in an open diff.

I ended up junking my old rear end,i did however have the HD rear swaybar taken off and put on the used rear end, yeah momma did not raise no fool lol.
