Should be able to pull the dust cover off the bottom of the bellhousing and inspect your flywheel. I've had that happen to me before. Good luck.

Doesn't sound like the flywheel to me, but stranger things have happened. My money is on the starter itself - everything mass produced gets a bad apple thrown in on occasion. Sounds like you may have drawn the short straw when you bought your replacement. ;)
