I just discovered that one of my Nivomat self leveling shocks on the rear of my Tahoe is blown. My first question: do I need to replace both or will I be alright just replacing the bad shock. These things are expensive and I don't really want to fork out all that money for 2. The truck has 83,000 miles on it and the other shock seems strong.

My second question: do any of you that have these shocks laying around used that you would be willing to sell? If I could get a lower mileage set used I would be all for that.

Thanks!

Take some soapy water in a squirt bottle, and with the shocks fully inflated, squirt the soapy water all over the other shock to make sure that it's indeed not leaking at all!! If slightly leaking, I'd either fork out the money for both shocks so you don't fry your compressor or switch over to regular non self leveling shocks!

thanks guys, but these are not the autoride shocks. These are the self leveling shocks. I actually just found some on eBay. 2 factory nivomats with under 10,000 miles for $200 shipped. Not bad considering everywhere I looked they were at least $350+ apiece new.

Curious...how did you discover one's bad? Bouncing too much bounce test? Leaking like crazy? Handling suddenly off kilter? Ebay price is good as cheapest I've seen new was about $320 a piece, but that's not including shipping etc.

I was driving the other day and I started getting a clunk with any suspension movement. I pulled off left rear shock and it was shot. I had noticed recently that the rear suspension had gotten to soft.

Oh OK, I was wondering if the bounce test had any validity with this vehicle. Never thought to take off the shock. I ask since I am debating the same thing, but I don't quite have the space to work on the vehicle right now...been looking at replacement prices and Cannot believe how expensive these Nivomats are. Thanks for the ideas...personally at that mileage, replacing both shocks at the same time sounds like the right thing to do.

Just a follow up:

I just received and installed my new/ used shocks I bought on Ebay. They were suppose to have under 10,000 miles on them and I definitely believe the guy. They look brand new. Anyways, I put them on and it raised the back of the Hoe up to where it should be. It had dropped almost 1 1/2" with the bad shock. I took it for a spin and I cannot believe how great it drives again. I had been noticing lately that it felt really squishy in the back, but not anymore. I am very happy for my $200 and 45 minutes of time. :party33:

Thanks for update. Nice to know it helped. What tire/wheel size you got, and what is distance from center of hub/axle to top of wheel well? I have completely stock setup and am at 22 inches. Got no idea how much it sagged over the years and 140k miles. Thanks for info and ideas.

I am running 285 50 20 tires, and from center of wheel straight up to lip is approximately 23 1/2" with 3/4 tank of gas.
