through the existing grommet on the driver side firewall

This is what I did on mine. I cut a slit in the existing grommet and I have about 4 wires running through there for my alarm, the foglights I added, and a dedicated power wire for my remote starter.

No, stick a wire like a coat hanger with wire tapped to it. Be careful not to pierce anything you shouldn't

Yes, tape your power wire to a stiff metal wire and poke it through. Then retrieve it under the dash and untape the wire and keep pulling it through. Try to cut or poke the hole as small as possible to avoid water getting in.
I actually have a custom made tool for pulling wire. I made it back when I used to install car alarms for a living. I used a rifle cleaning rod and I drilled a hole in it and sharpened the tip on a bench grinder. I just poke the wire through the hole just like threading a needle, then poke the rod through the grommet. The tool pokes the hole and feeds the wire at the same time. Just like using a needle and thread. I'll see if I can go find it and snap a picture of it for you.

I found it. Here are a few pics of the wire pulling tool that I made from on an old rifle cleaning rod. Its two pieces that screw together, and I keep a piece of rubber hose on the tip since its so sharp. Its basically a giant needle, LOL.
And I snapped a few pics to show how I use it with wire threaded into the hole. I usually tape it in place so it doesn't pull out on its own. I did it. I used a wire with a hard copper core and pass it throufgh the central hole.

ON a funny side, After I started the engine to park my truck, the DIC displaed a message about repairing the 4WD. I just had to touch a few wires and it vanished... This really is a Chevrolet. :D
