So I have had my Tahoe back for a few months now after letting family use over the past 2.5 years. I have been doing small little tune ups on it to make sure it in godd running order. In a couple weeks I have a 14 hour trip and I want to take the hoe. And I dnt believe the that the the oil in the front or rear diff have ever been changed. Has 145,000 original miles. So my question is will changing the diff fluid before this trip be a good idea or will this reveal hidden problems?

It won't hurt anything really, Unless you have an internal problem with your rear differential when you put the cover off and find something out of place. But then at least you can fix it then and there instead of having an issue down the road. That's the only thing I can really think of, which I don't think would be your issue, if your not having problems right now with them

Also, make sure your axle seals are not leaking. If they are, replace them. And use a friction modifier for the rear axle if you have the G80

1. How do I check my axle seals and are they hard to replace?
2.What is friction modifier? (I have G80)
3. And what gear oil in recomended?

Thanks for the reply

unknown at this time.
it won't make things worse but will lengthen it life if it is crappy. SAE 80W-90 GL5. Do not use limited slip additive aka friction modifiers. that will work in both axles. you can go synthetic on the '96 as well. and which seal do you mean. something don't look right?
