need to rebuild engine

hey everyone, i have a 2000 z71 obs that the engine is going bad in . it is starting to knock ,i think its a rod bearing i would like to pull the engine and rebuild myself i would like a little more power with out throwing codes any suggestions will be appriciated . can i add alittle compression and a little better cam and be safe as far as service engine light goes .i know i could do a search but my time is very limited ,you know the usuall full time job, upholster... 3 1/2 year old son and a beautiful wife who is going through hell as her dad has stage 4 cancer ,with maybe 3 months to live, so my days are real full .... again i am thankfull for any feedback.......... side note her dad is only 56 years old and its very aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to every bone in his body even his skull ,,, thanks again and man up and get checked out i know i am

Have you thought about putting in a Crate 383 in it?

I am unsure of what you can and cant do that would throw a code, but you can have the computer tuned to what you build.

I agree with the 383 crate.
