So a couple months ago I was looking to get rid of my motorcycle (2006 Kawasaki KLR650) and had a Craigslist ad up offering it up for sale or trade. Long story short, I traded for a '99 suburban with about 290k on it. I didn't really have any money in the bike, so my plan was to clean up and flip the suburban. After driving it a bit though I decided I'll keep it a while and told my fiance that she could take my 2014 F150. Of course it was after that when I found out the front evaporator leaks. Between that and fixing the torn up leather seats, I'm looking at spending $1200-1500 just on the interior. Not looking forward to pulling the dash, as this truck is equipped with the Onstar system and has a trailer brake controller wired up under the dash. Should be an interesting project...
As far as the exterior goes, the body looks pretty straight. The real problem is the paint. It was originally white. It appears the hood and maybe the roof were starting to peel as many '90s GM vehicles do. Instead of just repainting these panels, it looks like the previous owner took a bucket of black enamel and some rollers and paint brushes and just went to town on it. It looks bad. More orange peel than an actual orange... the good thing is it's cheap enamel and seems to have been done haphazardly and perhaps drunkenly, meaning no prep work was done. I dipped a shop rag in some gasoline and rubbed it into a door jamb and found shiny white paint underneath. My plan for the exterior is to get a few gallons of toluene, a big bag of rags, box of gloves, and a case or two of beer and reverse this "paint job". After that's done I'll be able to determine if I need to paint the whole truck or just some panels.
So anyway, here are a couple pictures of my new project:
The carpet needs some serious cleaning too...
