New to Suburbans

Considering buying a Suburban or Yukon and obviously there is a lot of variation in what's out there. Here's what I want, pretty much non-negotiable.
- Stop-and-Go adaptive cruise control (needs to be able to come to a full stop without kicking off the cruise. Tapping the gas to go again is OK)
-Rear view camera (understand those became mandatory about 2017)
-a flat rear floor long enough for me to stretch out all of my 6'2" and get some restful sleep.

Previously owned I-H Travelall and currently a Lincoln Blackwood so not real familiar with the Suburban/Yukon/Escalade line. Would there happen to be a meet I could go to within reasonable distance from Cincinnati? I have time to sort this out and make a good choice.

I probably have some misconceptions. My impression is that items 1 and 2 may have become available after 2017 and that item 3 requires a bench seat for the 2nd row seats, I've not yet looked at one of those. I need to find out what years and models I need to look at to get those features. I want to keep my purchase price as low as I can though. Not interested in new and 6 years old would be perfectly fine. Not overly concerned about hauling/towing capacity but 4wd would be a plus. Any help?

For comparison purposes, the Suburban needs to be compared to the Yukon XL (the straight Yukon has a shorter body). The base Yukon XL is virtually identical to the Suburban, except that the Yukon XL has nicer interior trim, and the other Yukon XL trim options just come with more bells and whistles. If you want to tow, the 6.2 motor is a better option than the 5.3 motor, but the 5.3 motor will still tow well.

Yes, for option 3, a Suburban or Yukon XL is the truck for you. The captains chairs in the second row fold up to be flush against the 1st row seats, so you have close to 7' clear/flat in the configuration.

My 07 has a rear view camera, but you will need to look at much more recent year models for the fancy cruise control.

Don't think this feature exists on the K2XX's

I agree with swathdiver 100%. I don’t know about meets in your area but I would be looking at Dealers and Carmax in your area to look at the different models. Do your research to make sure you get what you want. I’m pretty sure GM doesn’t offer complete stop on their adaptive cruise as the other member indicated.

Thanks. A salesman told me that there was a version that had a bench for the 2nd row seats instead of the buckets. I think that might work better for me since there would be no gap in the middle between the seats when they are folded down. He said the buckets and the bench used different mounting rails so for instance to change over you'd have to have the bench seat plus the mounting rails also, and then the carpet might be different as well so fairly involved, however I am competent to make such changes should it come to that.


On the cruise, I'm well familiar with the average cruise control and with several versions of adaptive cruise, not all equal. There seem to be two main versions: The one that kicks out around 20mph or so and has to be brought back up to speed and resumed, and the "stop-and-go" version which can come to a complete stop and remains engaged and can bring the car back up to speed without intervention. 2017 Mazdas had that for instance. I am not interested in the new hands off "Super Cruise".

A few things that might be helpful: The kind of adaptive cruise control you're after wasn't widely available until the latest generation of these (2021+). That said, automatic Emergency Braking (option code UHY) was available on the 2017+ Suburban with the LT level trim and higher but it's only functional between 5 and 50 mph, so even though it can fully stop the vehicle, it may not be what you're after. If the ability to function at highway speeds is a non-negotiable, you're likely looking for a 2021+ that has Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking (EAEB), which is option code UGN and works at all speeds above 2 mph. You can plug the VIN of any prospective vehicle into any of the online decoders and it will tell you whether or not it has UGN.

The flat floor in the rear is available with the 2000-2006, 2015-2020, and the 2021+ generations with the 2nd row bench seat. The 2007-2014 seats do not fold flat enough for sleeping comfortably, but many folks work around it by building a removable platform back there suitable for an air mattress.

2nd row bench seat was available on all models and trim levels as an option. Availability seems to be similar for the bench set version vs. captains chairs.

Thanks, that helps although I'm a bit disappointed with the new cruise only going down to 2mph. Guess the American manufacturers have a phobia about that which doesn't bother the Japanese. Or maybe the Japanese are more in tune with traffic jams, who knows? Anyway 2mph is certainly better than 20, or 40. Sounds like I'm stuck with '21 or newer then. That might mean waiting a couple years to buy.
