New Tranny???

Hello all,
I am new to this forum, but have looked everywhere and can't seem to find anything like what I am experiencing. I have a 99 GMC Yukon 1500 w/a
4L60E tranny. It started with grinding in the rear end, replaced ring and pinion and U-joint, test drove it and now won't shift into third or fourth. Changed tranny fluid and filter, had codes ran, found blown ENG-1 fuse, checked all wires and replaced camshaft position sensor, shift solenoid, and fuse quit blowing, but still no 3 or 4. Ran codes again, now says cam/crank correlation is off, but that shouldn't be messing with the tranny, so I took it on a test drive (about 1/4 mile), still no 3 or 4. Then, the return line for the tranny fluid popped off, way loose, not sure why. I tightened it back up, checked my fluid, not even low, and test drove it again. It did not pop off again, but still no 3 or 4. I don't know if any or all of this is related. I just cannot get ahead with this truck. Oh and the tranny was just replaced at the end of last year, that's why I am having a hard time accepting it's the problem.

3-4 clutch pack is burned up if it's an internal transmission issue. How did the fluid look when you dropped the pan?

Tranny fluid was a little dark, but didn't smell burnt. Hardly any shavings in it. Thanks for helping

Any parts of the clutch pack in the fluid? The clutch pack discolors the fluid when the clutch packs fail. When you pull the dip stick, you will see parts of it on it also.

With no 3rd or 4th gear, you will need either a rebuild or a new transmission unfortunately. Was this a new transmission or a rebuild?

If you have to rebuild the trany go bigger better and stronger. Put in better cluch packs and a the beast sun shell. If your some what a fixer upper person rebuild it your self. It's really not that hard and there is a ton of places that walk you throu it and DVDs. I did mine in a weekend. That is pulling and putting back in.

Oh and the tranny was just replaced at the end of last year, that's why I am having a hard time accepting it's the problem.


Rebuilt?? replaced new?? or replaced with used??
If it was rebuilt or replaced new,take it back it should be under warranty.

Length of time really doesn't matter, it's more of a mileage thing. That's why most places give X number of years OR X number of miles, which ever comes first.

There was nothing but fluid in the fluid, but it is my DD and I am constantly on the road. It was a rebuilt transmission, and I did put it in with my boyfriend. As far as being handy, not so much, I can follow the basic instructions , for troubleshooting, but I am a tiny girl and while I know quite a bit about this truck, it is only out of necessity that I know as much as I do. It looks like I am gonna have to buy a new transmission. I have been avoiding it for a while, hoping that it wasn't the problem, but it looks like its about time. Thanks everyone for the help.

Well if you are going for a new one check out monster transmission. Spend a little extra and never worry about it again and it will come with a better warenty.

I don't have much to contribute, except that it's really strange you blew the ENG-1 but didn't definitely find the cause of it. Looking at the schematic for that fuse, it should've been obvious what caused it to blow, or it should've kept blowing.

The guys at the chevytalk.org forum are _very_ helpful with transmission issues. They guided me through all the intricacies of replacing my 1-2 accumulator. There are a couple of current and former GM techs who monitor the forum who might be able to help you solve your problem in-place and without spending a bunch of money, in the event that it's electrical. Make sure you post in the tahoe forum through 98, because their 99 forum actually refers to 99+ silverados and 00+ tahoes (the newer GMT series trucks).

One more thing, I know 4th gear is commanded 100% electronically, but I believe you can still command 3rd from the gear selector. Have you tried going through the gears manually, 1 to 2 to 3, with sufficient RPMs to shift into 3rd? Have you wound it up high and backed off of the gas to see if it'll grab 3rd that way? It would be good to have that information on-hand before you post over there. Most likely your 3rd/4th clutches are gone, possibly as the result of reverberations from the rear-end problem you were having, who knows.
