No passing gear above 60?

Hi everyone,

I have a 2004 Z71 Tahoe, 5.3L V8, untuned. It has lots of power, real quick, and no problem on the highway passing cars. I just bought a 2005 Z71 Tahoe, 5.3L V8. It doesn't have a passing gear, or at least it won't kick in. I spoke to the previous owner who said it wasn't tuned, it is stock. Why would one truck drive completely different from the other. I've considered the gearing ratios (3.73 v. 4.10) but this thing just ramps up slowly in WOT. My old one throws you back in your seat at WOT. Anyone have an answer as to why this is happening?

Obviously, I'm going to have to get it tuned, and yes, I really should have stomped on it during the test drive. The truck has low low miles, incredible condition, and a price I couldn't resist.

The previous owner said he never noticed that there wan't a passing gear (???) and said it was never tuned. It seems to be getting slightly better mpg, but it also has 140,000 less miles, so......

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I would think that it may be a pcm issue. Our transmissions are electronically controlled and if it`s not kicking down when you stomp the gas there is obviously a problem.

I`d take it to a shop and have them take a look at it.

I looked around a little and found that your issue could also be caused by a bad throttle position sensor.
