I have been a forum floater for a few years but never a reason to post. But I've ran into a issue that has me stumped. I have a 2004 Tahoe Z71 with 186k. The other morning I put the Tahoe in reverse and nothing happened, all I could hear was a hum. I pushed it out of the drive, and drove 20 miles. Once there, I put it in 4hi, and got a horrible grinding sound and a loud thunk. Back to 2hi and everything was fine.

Drove 350 miles home yesterday, acted perfect. This morning in the drive, put the Tahoe in 4hi, and back into 2hi with no issues. Then a few minutes later going around 50 I get a horrible grinding/vibration. I pull over, the only thing to stop the grinding is switch to 4hi and back to 2hi.

In my driveway, 2low will not engage and it will grind in neutral until I switch through 4hi/2low. Then everything is normal again.

Transfer case fluid is at normal level. After searching, I'm thinking the transfer case motor is the issue? Does anyone else have opinions? I have one in order and plan on installing.

Drain the transfer case oil into a clean pan/container of some sort. What do you see.

I replaced the transfer case shift motor today, and changed the transfer case fluid as well. No metal shavings. All working as it should.

What are the lights (4wd buttons) indicating while all of this is happening? Do the buttons/led's switch properly? Does it blink on one setting and then just go out with no LED lit on any of the buttons? Any DIC messages?
