Is there any change in different transfer case modes?

I didn't even think of checking that, I'll check out what is does in 4lo and Auto4wd

Sorry for the delay in responding guys...was doing my tune up. Thanks to all for the help with that!
Anyway...I will try it out in Auto4wd, and see if the noise goes away and report back.
Thanks for the advice and help with this...I do appreciate everyones input.

Front wheel bearings, or rear pinion bearing, guaranteed.

Thanks...How do I check to see if they are bad or going bad?
How is it related to pressing the gas? Just trying to learn.
Thanks again.

Well the telltale sign of the front hub bearings failing is random ABS activation at low speeds. As for the rear end... I'm not sure if theres any way to know for sure without tearing into it, maybe drain the fluid and check it for metal shavings, etc. Honestly, its not going to kill anything. I drove with bad hubs for 20k before they failed, and the rear end went for about 65k before it became too loud and crunchy to handle.

Well thats good to know!! I did do a rear diff fluid change, and it looked clean...metal shavings were present on the magnet of course...but it has 83,000 miles on it, and I dont think it was even drained and replaced before that.

Mine makes that noise in 4hi, 4lo, and Auto4wd. But not in 2wd.

I had a similar whining noise coming from mine at 36000 miles. It sounded like a little turbine engine. Couldn't exactly pinpoint the location because it was so loud. Turned out it was my rear diff eating itself.

I havent had a chance to take her for a spin in 4wd...but the noise is there in 2wd...just the opposite. Interesting. Is changing the front hub bearings a difficult task?

unknown at this time.
If the noise is in 2wd only when gas is pressed ignore anything from the transfer case chain to the front wheels if '97 or older. On auto4wd units include evrything in the drivetrain except half shafts outwards.

Concentrate on front diffusion for you problems.

Thanks Sunlit...always there to help!
Not sure what it means when you say "Half shafts outwards", sorry.
