2016 Tahoe LTZ - first started on the passenger side, sometimes after closing the door you could hear the running board go in, then back out again. Other times after parking, it would remain out after closing the door. Now it's also doing it on the driver's side - doesn't always go back in after parking/exiting. Anyone know what controls these? I'd rather not have to take it to the dealership if it's something simple I can fix/replace on my own. Vehicle is out of warranty period.

They have their own control module. It’s located on the driver side mounted to the power step frame. The running board conceals it when stowed. If you replace it, I don’t think it needs to be programmed, but may need an ignition cycle and/or opening/closing the doors.

I’ve heard of dirt causing power running boards to do what you described. Some have had luck with a good cleaning of the articulating parts and then lubrication.

You could always start with the old master reset and disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so for any residual power to drain.

Let us know how it turns out.

So I had the module replaced under warranty a couple years ago when mine were acting weird like yours. It’s been fine until this past week and it’s started again.

We stress them with our severe winters with the snow and ice but they handle it. Guess I need to do some experimenting again.

Make sure they are clean and greased up really good. Mine did this and they were dirty and I regressed them and they work like new.

Hi

I have a 2013 Yukon XL with the retractable boards.

Luckily, when I bought it used I also bought a Service Contract from Endurance.

BTW> Endurance is AWESOME !!!

Back to the boards.

I live in MN and this year we had a stretch of below Zero ° for weeks. Double digits below Zero.

This is my 4th winter having it, and they have never failed until this winter.

When stopped working, driver side was stuck down, and passenger side was stuck in up position.

Dug into it thinking like you might be something I could just do.

Was thinking there must be some reset procedure, consulted forums, but ones suggested didn't work including the battery neg cable disconnect.

Since I had the warranty, took it in hoping for coverage, but some components are, & some aren't.

Only few things it could be & as this suggestion you rec'd for the control module, that was my issue as well after diagnosis.

Found out that the module is covered and the parts on order.

Next winter I'm putting them down & then switching off, as I'm convinced the super cold weather took my module out.

My thought & situation

Best regards

The ones in ours were stuck down when we got it used. Don't know how they worked up till then but the hinges were seizing and replacing the one with the motor on each side fixed them. If a good cleaning doesn't get them moving that's probably what's wrong. You could hear them trying to move when they were supposed to but they didn't.
