OEm vs. remanufactured?

What is your thoughts on OEM vs remanufactured parts?
My water pump seems to have blown a gasket and leaked out. A friend of mine thinks I should only buy OEM from dealer. HE says remanufactured after brand parts wont last.
Dealer wants 266.06 for water pump plus suggested replacement of thermostat housing 61.40.
Auto parts stores range around 100 to 130.00

For a water pump no I would not use a remanufactured. You don't really have to go OE, but typically when you buy OE parts you know you are getting what was designed to be on the vehicle and you know that OE parts tend to last a very long time.

I work at a NAPA autocare center and we use NEW NAPA branded water pumps and have had no problems with premature failure.

I think you should be ok as long as you go with NEW.

I only do OEM for hard parts, and stick with the new parts over the reman where possible.

I've been burned too many times by lifetime warranty alternators and starters. I've also been put in danger once by a lifetime warranty rebuilt brake master cylinder. When I was young and poor there wasn't much choice, but now that I'm older and established I'll spend the extra money up front and do it right.

I've spent way too much time and money replacing chain store brand, 'lifetime warranty' parts. It's cost me in towing, rental cars, and way too much time changing the part a second or third time down the road. In the end, it always cost more money than doing it once, the right way with OEM.

Spark plugs, aftermarket plug wires, maybe a radiator I'll take a chance on. Other than that, it's OEM for me.

I have 03 tahoe 5.3, a year ago the water pump started leaking from the gasket in my way from Florida to Chicago " it wasnt too bad" but I knew I had to change it anyway, the dealers over here told me the price would be 250+ plus I have to change the thermostat+housing "the new ones got different housing then the one comes with the car due to design changed". anyway the price was too much for me to pay then I tried to look up the prices online, i found an OEM for 117, I bought it and went to the dealer n ask him is that an OEM, he said yes where did you get that one, I said online for 117. This is the part number " 251-743" it is ACDelco, you will find it on ebay for cheap, i will uploade the part exact photo for you.
