Oil Catch Can

Why? What does it do? What breaks if you don’t have one?

Nothing breaks. I didn't see anyone post that you need one, just an easy mod to keep your engine cleaner.

I emptied mine today after 2k miles and got just under 1.5 ounces. It was dark but in the sun had a redish tint?

Not so much that something breaks...

Normally an engine will have some oil get past things and gets into the intake (PVC valve), on engines (before direct fuel injection) that oil would hit the intake valves and the gas from the carb or the fuel injectors that were above the intake valves would wash it off.

Now on direct fuel injected engines (like the 5.3 and the 6.2), the injector is directly in the cylinder next to the spark plug and below the intake valve. The oil still gets into the intake, but now has nothing to wash it off because the fuel doesn't come from above any more.

These cans catch that oil before it gets into your engine, to keep things cleaner and help with carbon buildup. Personally I don't know the science behind it if it truly is something that adds longevity to the motor or not, but the logic makes sense, and I am planning to get one for myself one of these days.

Dang.... my 2011 Burb LT has 115k miles, so i'm sure my cylinders are full of that crap! I'm going to invest in one of these.... better late than never!

Nope. And, there is more than one thread here on the Forum that goes into great detail on why oil catch cans are also good for these motors. One of the main reasons are a result of direct fuel injection introduction to these motors, and as a result, there is no longer the capability of the solvent action of gasoline washing the backs of the valves, to keep them clean of deposits.

I forgot to mention, I checked my oil level which I'm good but man was it dirty (black). I'm only at 3524 and did not expect oil to be dark at this point. Basically looks like what came out the can.

Told you I would check my can at 600 miles but here it is at 3500 miles. I caught about 6 ounces and the color of the oil on the dipstick was much better. My first 3 changes the dipstick was very dark, like black. This is after 3rd oil change since new and the oil looks more like I would expect. Black color maybe a result of engine break in?

I can’t seem to find a can that fits the 2022 Yukon/Tahoe…anyone have a link?

Don’t know if anything changed for 22’s but if it didn’t you can use a 19-21 Silverado can (elite) and fits right in there.

Post a pic of your engine bay and I can tell you if it looks the same as the 21.
