Synthetic or not is not really an issue with sludge. It is really the detergents in the oil that do the cleaning.

So is that a good thing or a bad thing? If synthetic loosens up sludge and sends it into the filter, that seems like a plus.

Well, "todays" oil is better than that of 5-7 years ago but still will gunk up with the junk in the oils causing the oil to stay sticky. For what ever reason, this doesn't seem to happen with full synthetic oils.

I got it with 211K on it and at 213K started using AMSOIL but here lately i have been using Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 due to cost. i have a few videos on the tube of different filters and how they looked. i didnt really expect this one to be so bad but plan on changing the current one probably around the 1000 - 1500 mark. also might go to Pennzoil yellow bottle for my next oil change since i am not going over 3k per change.

what type filter do you recommend?

I like Wix filters, I can get the 51036 in the 12 pack for about $4.25 a pop shipped.
