That is complete Overkill IMHO. 5K miles should work just fine as long as you are not constantly short tripping and constantly doing extremely long idling. At 5K miles my oil life is anywhere from 24-33%. Depends on how much gridlock I get into. I use either 0w20 Mobil 1 Truck&Suv oil or 0w20 AC Delco.in my opinion the oil should be changed regularly at 3000 miles, regardless of what any spec or book tells you, it's just good maintenance.
Also it is good for the cylinder shut off system to keep the oil clean, there may not be any "studies" out there but it is generally believed that doing this may help prevent problems with collapsed lifters.
