well i know it isn't my oil pressure gauge because if it was i wouldn't hear any change in my engine (noise) when my oil pressure is alledgedly at zero . but i do so that option is eliminated. when the pressure is at zero i hear loud clicking thats sounds like a diesel.the gauge just warns of a problem, not contribute to it.

im going to change the oil tomorrow and hopefully that solves the problem although my current oil levels are perfect. i will update if there is any change.

on second thought i'm also going to pull the oil pan just to check the fiber timing gear and oil pump since i will have the oil drained anyway.

fixed the problem this morning! :)

turns out it was the fiber timing gear! i bought castrol syntec 10w30 and a fram oil filter on special for 20 bucks at autozone and came home. drained the oil, pulled the oil filter and replaced. then pulled the oil pan just to check the pump and timing gear. there was so much break off on the pickup screen it was ridiculous! so i took my my wifes truck back to autozone and they sent me to another autozone that happened to have the steel main timing gear and the new pickup screen. only costed about 120 bucks in total. went home and used the puller to get the gear off (it came off easily enough) put the new steel gear on. put the oil pan back on with a new gasket, filled it up and started it. perfect!

it makes a difference noise now but that is the steel timing gear. no more diesel sound and pressure is acting regular again! crazy how easy that was!

it saves me a lot of money versus having a mechanic look at it and charge me all kinds of money!

You have a 4dr or a 2dr. I need a new oil pan in mine...seems if I drop it need to move few other things out of the way.

i have a four door but the only thing even slightly in my way was the brake lines. they run on the side towards the bottom to middle of the oil pan on the left side. i just pushed them over a couple inches and presto the pan drops right out. the new gasket only costs like 12 bucks at autozone. pretty simple.

do you have other stuff in the way? if you do then you probably have 4 wheel drive cause on some vehicles 4wd and 2wd are setup a little differently (like rearranged differently). may not be the case but i'm just suggesting. the only 4wd i had before was 84 blazer (that thing was a monster!). but almost every 350 i see the oil pan has clear and direct access.

I've got an 04' and my gauge has gone wacky too. About three months ago it just went dead to zero and I figured it was a stepper motor but in the last few weeks it started going up and down.... it s either 80 or 0..... still think stepper but thought I'd ask for y'alls opinions since we are on the subject...

the change seems pretty random although it will go to 80 under acceleration more often then not........

grocery getter, the reason mine was doing that wasn't because of the fiber timing gear, but because of all the crap from the fiber timing gear that was broken off resting on the pickup screen. that blocked the oil from flowing properly hence i didn't have any oil pressure unless i was making that oil pump work.

i recommend changing your oil and at the same time make it a heavier weight like 10w30 if you have over a 100k. i don't know how mechanically inclined you are but i recommend you take off the oil pan and check pickup screen, oil pump and fiber timing gear all at once. trust me i was glad i did. if i hadn't i would have been driving down the road and had it go out on me in the middle of no where on my way to work.

since you have have an 04 grocery getter, is it the 5.3l?

No problem man, glad to help. Noticed you're from the bay too, maybe I'll see your truck around, haha.

i have the same problem he thinks he had but mine really exists. and i was about to post this but i guess it's just luck.

anyways, my oil pressure does drop when i brake. but also when my transmission shifts gears. and when i put change from/to park/drive/reverse/nuetral. and when i first start it up. and when it drops, it drops to zero. even if it is fully warmed up. but when i press the pedal and increase my rpm's my oil pressure levels out and is fine, until i shift or the tranny shifts gears or i brake. and the oil pressure gauge reads zero i have this wierd clicking sound/noise (sounds like a diesel) from somewhere under the hood (can't locate, sounds travels like crazy). but clicking sound goes away when i force my oil pressure level to stabilize.

once again thanks for any help.

i know my problem is way different then yours, but i hear a noise when i first start up my truck. not a super loud clunk, but yeah a range of clunks. Almost like if something wasnt lubricated and metals were bandging on each other.....but i have no idea what to look for only that is comes from under the hood and usually only on first start up or when cold.

I do have a 5.3l and I can certainly pull the oil pan......don't want to but I can do it. I am due for a change in 3K mi or so and will pull the pan then. I do not know what the fiber timing gear is or anything but I'll figure it out......
