I have a stock 97 2-door, and I was playing on a smooth muddy dirt road, I stopped, turned my wheel all the way to the right, stomped on the gas to do a 180, and all of a sudden I lose my power steering, WTF? Hard as hell to turn, but was able to get it home, (would have got out and checked, but was pouring rain), PS fluid fine, no bursted hoses, belt fine, WTF? Does a pump just take a crap that quick, and that bad? Please help, and thanks in advance!

I understand that, but do the pumps just stop working instantly like that? I thought they just got worse over time

Well the steering gear could be the cause, but seeing how it was being used in abusive conditions you might have just made the pressure relief valve in the pump get stuck open and causing a loss of pressure

Where is the pressure relief valve located on the pump, and how do I check it or fix it? And where is the steering gear located that you speak of?

I lost "power" steering turning right only on my NBS. It was the steering gear box. I replaced and all was good.

I did this on a wet road... Had to replace the ps unit... Nvr got to the bottom of it but my guess is it was too much for the ps and the shaft inside took a crap...

Get back in, find another muddy road, turn the wheel the other way and feebly attempt said 180 in other direction and see if it fixes it. :D
