So I’m on vacation in Biloxi Mississippi and I drove my truck down here. I went out to go for a cruise and ended up at a car meet. Stayed there for an hour and a half to 2 hours then left. Not long after I left I apparently lost 3rd gear and overdrive. Checked trans fluid, it’s full but dark. Can someone please help me shed light on what’s going on? I’m 5 and a half hours away from home and idk what to do. It’ll start off in 1st and not shift into second until about 2,500 rpms and it will shift really hard but it won’t shift anymore after it shifts into second. No check engine light either. If there’s anyone that could help shed light on this problem it would be greatly appreciated. I need to know before Saturday as well

What happens if you try to manually shift through the gears?

I had this same thing happen to me with my old 96 Impala SS, it had the 4L60E and I was driving calmly when all of a sudden I was hitting the gas but the engine would just rev and not pull forward anymore. I had to put the shifter into 2 and then I was able to drive it till I got home. It would only give me 1st gear and SLAM into 2nd gear. I had to have the trans rebuilt and there were a few broken hard bits in the trans. Limp it home, it'll be a long ride in 2nd gear, but it should make it. Or it'll have to be towed, as something broke inside your trans and it definitely will need to be pulled out and rebuilt.

God I hope that’s not the case with me!

Like everyone else said its probably toast especially with 200k+ miles on it. Your family owns a scrap yard pull a 4l60 out of something and slam it in yours for now. 4l60s are time bombs but millions if trucks have them and they work just find especially if you just need something to drive again asap.
