Sooooo, on a long road trip and truck is having misfire issues.

I drove the family from NM to OH a few weeks ago for a family wedding. I have since flown home and back for the drive home to NM. My wife picked me up enroute and with the news the check engine light had come on briefly on the way to get me.

It came on during a rough section of the freeway but went away On its own. Truck was running well when she picked me up so we pushed onward. About 90 miles from Indianapolis I experienced it, a brief period of flashing engine light and rough running then back to normal Before I could figure out what was happening. While looking at the engine code (P0307) I inadvertently cleared it via the maestro rr.

We stopped at a dealer in Indianapolis and they were great, looked at it as best they could but since I cleared the code there wasn’t anything to see. We pushed on...

About 3 miles from Terra Heute the sirens called out again. Same thing, rough running for a bit then back to normal. So we stopped at another dealer they wouldn’t look at it until the morning so we decided to drive a bit more and made arrangements with a dealer in St Louis to look at it first thing this morning.

In the morning the service shop couldn’t find any cause for the code. The plug had some fouling so we replaced it to be safe. We drove across MO and just into OK it reared itself again, but this time different. worse. This time it was initially a P3000 with a noisy lifter and decreased power. I pulled over and somewhere the P3000 code changed to P0307. While waiting for my roadside assistance to find help that could tow and provide transportation for 2 adults and 3 kids in car seats (I know, I’d probably still be waiting) I turned on the engine again. It seemed ok enough so I slowly drove it a few miles to the 4th dealership.

So we’re at a hotel awaiting what news the service shop brings in the morning. Any insight on what I may be looking at/ my best options /etc...
It’s a 2012 suburban with 147000 miles.

Sorry to hear of this Pete, takes all the fun out of a trip when you have car trouble. Well, the simple would be a bad coil or injector. It's probably a bad de-ac lifter and a proper AFM repair is to replace all of the lifters, trays, head gaskets, head bolts, the VLOM, etc. About $3500-4000 for dealer retail and a 1/2 days work for a good, competent mechanic familiar with the process.

start with basic trouble shooting:
check the plug it's the far back one #7 driver side(make sure the engine is cold i don't know if you have aluminum block)
ignition coil swap to #5 if the plug is ok

mine was cooked with a Diamond hard carbon coating (not even a metal dental pick worked)when i pulled one out from #1 on mine.

No fun indeed.
You Sir were correct on your estimates. The bill will be a tad higher, but nevertheless I appreciated the ability to brace myself for the bad news.

I just made it back to NM with the family via a rental. I’ll figure how I’ll go back to bring the suburban home after it’s open heart surgery is done.

Thanks for the responses.
