Painting exterior plastics

anybody used rattle cans to paint exterior plastics, i.e. grille shell, d pillars. I you did how did they come out, and did you sand or prep in any way?

I used Duplicolor rattle cans on a grille, and it came out pretty good. I don't have any pics though. Here are the steps I took wet sand first with 800/1000 grit, couple coats of primer, wet sand again with 1000 grit, couple coats of paint, wet sand again with 2000 grit, clear coat.

Used rattle can primer, and clearcoat when I did my lower valance. Used a paint gun to lay that down. But used a rattle can for everything when I did my emblem.
