I purchased a used 2007 Suburban with a backup camera that is hard to use as it has no guidelines to help estimate direction or distance. Is this normal on this model year? Can I change this with software or by installing a newer system?

there is a universal backup system called "mirrors", all that camera is good for is so that you don't push your bumper into something, it doesn't tell you if there is a kid riding his bike on the sidewalk or if there is some idiot driving through the other direction. etc. etc and so on.

They added the lines sometime after 2009, mine is plain like yours. You'll get used to it and learn to listen to your back up sensors. I'm sure it can be upgraded but not sure if it's a software, hardware, or both kind of update.

I wish I had a camera on my 2009 for the sole purpose of hitching up the trailers solo. I know I can add one aftermarket, and I might one day, but there are other things earlier in the list. ;)
