Okay...haven't posted in a while but thought that starting this thread might be helpful. First sole background to let you know what's been going on...
I have a 2004 Tahoe, 5.3. In Tennessee (or at least in a few counties including mine), you you have to go through emissions testing in order to register or renew your registration. The first year I had the Tahoe, 2010, I had trouble getting it through the drive cycle so all of the readyness monitors would read "okay," so I hired a mechanic to do it. I passed and problem solved, so I thought. This year I went through the same routine, failed, and took it back to the mechanic to run the drive cycle again, which I thought was weird...I hadn't replaced or disconnected the battery so why won't it pass? Unfortunately even after having the mechanic do the drive cycle this year, I still failed the emissions test.
So hear we are. I went to another mechanic and explained the issue, as well as some other weird things that were going on...4 wheel drive module wouldn't funny, oil change monitor wouldn't reset, wiper fluid kept showing as empty, and the list goes on. His first thought was that the computer was losing its "keep alive" circuit when the key was shut off. The initial diagnosis was a bad ignition switch. I left it with them to diagnose fully (remember I can't get tags without getting this fixed), and they have come to conclude that it is a computer problem...hardware, not software.
I'm getting it replaced and reprogrammed tomorrow morning. I will let you all know the result, but I figured I would start this thread and add to it in case someone else is experiencing the same symptoms. Updates to follow!
