hey everyone

I bought an 04 Tahoe z71 with 164k miles back in December

I've been driving it daily for the most part until recently alternating between that and my other car.

Since owning it I've never had a staring issue with it till yesterday (Tuesday) last drive it Saturday

So I get in it yesterday and turn the key and the dash lights and gauges come on as usual but no crank and no clicking noise. No noise at all.

When I turn the key the headlights come on to their usual brightness but when trying to start the headlights go out completely. Not sure exactly what that indicates.

What can this be? Battery, starter? Any help will be appreciated

Haven't tried tapping on the starter yet but maybe I should?

Thanks in advance. It's a bummer because when I bought this truck I drive it for 2 months straight and I let my Saab sit and when I got into my Saab that wouldn't start. I had to call a Mobil mechanic and he said it was flooded. He blew into some vacuum line and it started up. Kind of ironic now I'm having a problem with the hoe after I told him I'd be selling one or the other. He advised to keep the Tahoe. I recently turned down an offer on it also

Forgot to mention that it also did nothing when trying to jump. Just tested the starter relay and that's good.

Any ideas? I tapped on the starter. Maybe not hard enough and did nothing

Also check the battery cables where they connect to ground and the starter. A loose connection could be your culprit. Possibly the battery has lost some of its cold cranking ability but still have enough juice to power lights and accessories.

Thanks for the tips but still no luck.

When I get home I'm going to check both ignition switch fuses- the 40amp ones.

Is it ok to remove the blower motor switch which is a 40 amp also to test?

Could it be likely one of the ignition switch fuses is blew out? Even though all the accessories come on? Not sure if the fuses also power the accessories but if they do then this won't solve my issue

Sounds more battery, ground issue then fuses but hard to tell. I would really move the neg cable around and the positive on the starter. Check all other grounds, test the batt too if you can.

Move the key around in the ignition switch.....just an idea

I had a mechanic come out today and he said he cross wired the starter and it started up.

He said he wasn't sure what was originally wrong but maybe sending the electric waves back into the system maybe got it working? Not sure if it makes sense.

He then disconnected the negative terminal ad the car was started to see if the electric sysytem was fine and it was he said. Turned truck off a few times and it started back up fine.

Is it ok to cross wires on the starter or is this a sign of more problems to come?

A guy is not an educated auto mechanic (electrical systems) if he uses the term "cross wired the starter". Make him get far far away from your vehicle. He probably just found a loose or dirty connection or you have a bad starter and he thought "he fixed it" but did not which means it will do it again.

That's what I figured. I felt like he rigged it or something.
