Porter Cable 7424 XP

Just took order of a porter cable Xp and can't wait!

In the kit I'm getting these pads:

1 Orange Cutting Pad
1 White Polishing Pad
1 Gray Finishing Pad
2 Blue Finishing Pads
2 Red Soft Wax Pads

And...

12 oz. Pinnacle XMT Polishing Foam Pad Cleaner
12 oz. Pinnacle XMT Polishing Foam Pad Conditioner

This is my first step into a higher level of detailing. What kind of cutting/polishing compounds, sealants, and waxes do you all recommend that I look in to?

A good starting point is the Poor Boys line up. SSR 2.5 and SSR 1 is a good way to learn.


I've got a 7424 and love it.

7424 is a great tool. The Poorboy's 2.5 and 1 are great way to go. The 2.5 is more of a medium swirl remover. I use it all the time. Everything they have is really good.

How about the pads? How many do you all keep on hand....I know one cutting pad will not do my entire truck

Why? I use the CCS pads and have done several vehicles and they are still in good shape. You just need to keep them clean. I like to soak them in Murphy's Oil Soap for a few hrs and then rinse them good.

Because after a while the pad will have residue on it, I was thinking I'd rotate in a fresh pad after maybe half of the truck was done.

Buffer + 2 pads (1 cutting, 1 polishing) = $300...but you know what...these big buffers are WORTH it! lol...your going to enjoy it bro, I promise! Congrats!!

That thing will last you till your dead, seeing as how you wash your truck maybe twice a year.
